8 reasons someone’s injectable treatments might not look quite right

If you’ve ever read a magazine, watched a TV show or simply walked down the street of inner-city Perth, it’s likely you’ve seen a person whose injectables were less than natural. Even concerning, off-putting or underwhelming.

Stumbling across a person who looks just a little bit well, odd, following a recent injectables appointment is understandably off-putting. And makes many people swear off the anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers entirely.

But, according to Skindepth Perth Cosmetic Nurse, Brooke Iriks, there’s usually a totally innocent explanation, be it part of the natural healing process or an inexperienced injector.

Here’s some of the reasons you may have spotted an injectables situation that wasn’t quite right:

A client’s tight budget: Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are an investment in your future self – in other words, they come with a price tag. Most injectable customers budget and plan for their initial treatment and maintenance appointments months in advance. Often what you consider an ‘unfinished’ look on a cosmetic injectables client is simply them taking part in a staged treatment plan, that will be finished in coming months and have them looking perfectly refreshed.

A client not listening to their injector – Some clients simply don’t want to cooperate. The cosmetic nurse can tell them again and again that they ‘have enough filler in their lips’ or ‘there are no muscles moving on your face to warrant more treatment’. While Skindepth Perth will turn away clients they don’t feel they can treat responsibly, many clients may seek the treatment elsewhere and end up with subpar results.

A rare case of side effects – Like any medical treatment, injectable treatments come with the potential for side effects. This most commonly includes some minor bruising and/or swelling, but also less common allergic reactions or infections. These side effects usually settle within two weeks but can make someone look a little uneven or sore for a short period of time.

The injectables products might just be wearing off – The beauty of injectable treatment is that they are not permanent. They wear off. The good news is that if you love the treatment, you can be put on an affordable maintenance plan to keep up your refreshed look. But if you just don’t think the treatment is very you, the anti-wrinkle injection wear off after about three months or the dermal filler can be dissolved. Some injectable treatments that may look a little odd to the eye is simply a result of the products wearing off. Particularly if someone has had filler dissolved, which can have them looking a little deflated for two to four weeks.

The product is still ‘settling’ - A person may look a little ‘off’ during the post-treatment healing period – generally the first two to four weeks. This is when the treatment is ‘settling’ into the structures of the face and they may be moving their face a little differently than usual. This is simply their body adapting to its new surroundings and their face movement usually goes back to normal within the first week.

A different idea of beauty – Like it or not, the western ideal of beauty is not everyone’s cup of tea. Asian clients tend to prefer a slimmer jawline and rounder cheeks. Middle eastern clients prefer larger lips and higher arched brows. What you think is beautiful on yourself or someone else, is not necessarily what everyone considers the ideal.

Lack of experience by injector – Cosmetic treatments are a skill, and it takes many years of study and practice to be truly considered experienced. Generally, new injectors will be competent at upper face anti-wrinkle treatments, cheeks and lips filler – however, full face treatments and assessments are still in development. If a person wants a specific area or concern treated outside their injector’s area of expertise, a good practitioner should always refer them to a doctor/experienced nurse. Unfortunately, not all cosmetic nurses do. Often, treatments that don’t look quite right are due to cheaper, inexperienced injectors simply not doing the right thing.

Lack of appointments – Most experienced injectors have a waitlist, so unless someone is super organised and can predict the future of their face, they generally have to wait for their appointment! This may mean their frown will be moving more than usual for a while or their filler looks a little deflated for a couple of weeks.

The takeaways?

Don’t let subpar results you’ve spotted on other people put you off the beauty of anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. Instead, invest in a quality, experienced injector who has your best interests at heart, so you can reap all the confidence cosmetic injectables have to offer.
