Do face rollers and crystal stone massages work?

Crystal rollers are seriously #trending right now. A quick scroll of your Instagram, and photos of these pretty little beauty accessories will likely appear, along with captions promising a non-surgical alternative to a face-lift.

They’ve gained popularity so quickly that they’re now readily available on your department store shelves, and they’ve even infiltrated some professional facial treatments.

But are there really any benefits to rolling a rock on your face?

Potential benefits

Other than making for a great looking Instagram flatlay, crystal rollers are smooth and cool, offering a relaxing massage post-facial or peel. They also play a role in lymphatic drainage which encourages the movement of fluids around the body. Improved lymphatic drainage has a range of potential benefits, including enhanced blood circulation, a balancing of body fluids and improved immune function. All this said, the research into lymphatic drainage is still in its infancy and no peer-reviewed studies linking jade rollers and the like to beauty or body benefits are currently available.

So, are crystal rollers simply a waste of money?

Are crystal rollers really able to reduce fine lines and wrinkles with the swipe of a hand? Short answer: no.

There are a host of factors which influence the structures of your face as you age.  Think ligaments, repositioning fat compartments, collagen development and maintenance, reabsorption of bony facial structures, lines, dynamic wrinkles – the list goes on.

Scientists, doctors and nurses spend years studying the anatomical structures of the face to produce the wide range of products and services on the market to target these problems.  Unfortunately, none of them are rocks.

Are crystal rollers damaging to our skin?

Although considered non-invasive and safe, crystal rollers aren’t without their risks. People suffered from acne breakout or cold sores can quickly suffer infections if your roller is not sterilised properly beforehand. If you do choose to use a crystal roller, ensure you clean it between each use using warm soapy water. If you are suffering from a breakout, avoid using them altogether until the infection has cleared and definitely avoid rolling over active pimples.
